Match Report from David Taylor The Line-up

The Whites started well, playing good football, and causing the home defence many problems, especially down the flanks, where Watson and McQuillan were on top form.

So it was no surprise when, in the twenty-fifth minute, a ball over the defence from Neill allowed Watson to take on his marker, and even though he was initially fouled, he kept his feet rather than going down. From the bye line he pulled the ball back for Patton to score from eight yards out, with a neat drive into the top corner.

Another goal came ten minutes later when McQuillan went on a mazey run, from the half way line, and with everyone waiting on a pass, he drifted past the last defender and drove the ball past the keeper for a superb individual goal.

The second half saw the home team come more into the game, and Armstrong had to be at his best to deal with a couple of good shots on target, to keep the home side at bay.

Continuous pressure paid off for the home team, when a stinging shot, off a greasy surface, saw the visitor’s keeper spill the ball, and Montgomery was on hand to slide the ball home from close range to pull one back.

This seemed to inspire the visitors, rather than the home side, and in the seventy fifth minute, Stewart sent Patton away, with a lovely through ball, and he calmly slotted it past the keeper, for his second and his team’s third goal.

Manager's Comments

A very young side played extremely well, and even when the home side pulled one back, they simply stepped up a gear and scored a third to put the game out of Glenavon’s reach.

New signings Armstrong (who was with Co. Down at the Milk Cup last week) and Mercer (signed from Linfield) had excellent debuts and will be useful additions to the squad. Neill, Watson and Patton (who was with Co. Antrim at Milk Cup) moved up from the Youth team and all three played their part in a convincing win. Niall Gardiner who was with the Whites before, has returned from university in England and really settled into midfield, as if he had never been away.
