Sirocco Works 4  Lisburn Distillery Seconds 3 (HT 2-0) (Dixon Park, Belfast)

Match Report from David Taylor The LIne-up

The Whites started well, creating good chances, especially down the right, but the final ball was missing, either straight at the keeper or else too deep. Then in the 25th minute with almost their first serious attack, an innocuous looking shot hit a divot as Armstrong attempted to gather it in. It bounced against his chest and the forward had an easy task of giving Sirocco an undeserved lead.

Worse was to follow when a quickly taken free kick, as the wall was being built, flew into the net for goal number two. Try as they might, the Whites were unable to find the finish their football deserved, and they went in two down at half time.

Two more goals in the space of seven minutes saw the young Whites with a mountain to climb, but undismayed they continued to play excellent football and with twenty-five minutes left, got their just reward when a lovely cross from Patton on the right was volleyed home from 10 yards out by Mercer, a sweet strike.

Five minutes later more pressure from the Whites saw Forsythe stab the ball home during a panic goalmouth scramble. The Sirocco team were now in panic mode, just booting the ball clear, anywhere and everywhere, and one of their players was dismissed for a second bookable offence.

More good play down the left, with ten minutes left on the clock, allowed Martin to break clear and he coolly slotted in number three from eight yards out.

Now it was game on, but the Whites were cruelly robbed of a goal when the ball was pulled back from the goal-line and stabbed home, only for the referee to give an offside.

Then the referee denied Gardiner a penalty, when he was brought down just inside the box.Two minutes from the end a 20 yard strike from Magee shaved the crossbar, with the keeper beaten all ends up. Try as they might they could not find the equaliser they so thoroughly merited and were out of the cup.

Manager's Comments

The only disappointment for us in this game was the result. We played excellent football, even when we went four goals behind, and full credit to the eleven players on the park for showing super commitment, and entertaining the small crowd watching with a thrilling game that never faltered. Two bad goals in the first half, when we were on top plus some debateable refereeing decisions, made this a sad way to go out.
