Lisburn Distillery Seconds 4 Larne Olympic 0 (HT 0-0)

Match Report from David Taylor The LIne-up

The first half was a non-event for the Whites, they allowed Larne too much room, did not close them down quickly enough, and when they got the ball they either gave it away or booted it down the middle for the home defenders to head it straight back down the pitch again. So it was no surprise that for all their endeavours they went in goalless at half time.

The second half started brightly for the Whites as they had now settled, and were playing much more fluently, the chances were now beginning to be created, but it was into the last twenty minutes before anything looking like a goal was going to be scored.

Then Verner, in the box, controlled a cross from the right, took his time rounding the defender to coolly slot the ball home from close range. Now the flood gates opened, and the Whites scored two more in the space of seven minutes, the first a cracking drive from outside the box, by Dickson, and then Catney drove the ball into the net from 15 yards out, after a good cross from Patton.

More pressure saw Verner add a fourth, but despite trying as hard as they could to improve their goal difference, the Whites failed to add to their tally and went in 4-0 winners.

Manager's Comments

This was a game we needed to win, and win well, to improve our goal difference, as Linfield were on the same number of points as ourselves. So the team did all that was asked of them and now await the result of the Linfield game, to see if we progress through to the semi-final of the George Wilson Cup. At the back Spence was solid, and Catney looks to be back to his best form, ably assisted by young Magee and Dickson, while Verner added two more to his tally for the seconds. Mention should be made of the three young subs; Patton, Cooling and Mercer, all contributed to the win and they did not look out of place amongst the senior team members.

Footnote - Linfield Swifts lost their last game (1-2) against Glenavon Res and Lisburn Distillery Seconds now go into the semi-finals of the George Wilson Cup
