A blue night for the appearance of the Whites new away kit.Outgunned,
outfought and outplayed meant only one result, Paul Kirk's side
are out of this season's CIS Cup.
The
Whites were one down in the fourth minute, Ronan Scannell's cross
finding John O'Loughlin unmarked and he headed across the goal into
the far corner from eight yards out.
The
Reds were never in danger in the opening half and Phil Matthews
made a great one handed stop on the edge of the area to deny Mark
Holland on 27 minutes. Eight minutes later Matthews didn't gather
a cross and this time Holland was on hand to penalise the mistake
and slot home from 15 yards out.
Ryan
Catney fired over when the Whites had their first pot at goal on
37 minutes. Two minutes before the break Matthews made a great save
to keep out Chris Scannell's header as Cliftonville continued to
make all the running.
The
Whites needed something to get themselves back into the game and
they got just that on 48 minutes. Conor Hagan was tackled by Scannell
and ended up on the pitch and the referee pointed to the spot.It
looked harsh indeed but Hagan tucked the penalty away and the Whites
were within touching distance.
That
though was as close as they came because they never threatened John
Connolly in the Reds' goal for the rest of the game and it was all
over on 63 minutes. Hesitancy at the back enabled Chris Scannell
to come running in and bury a header from George McMullan's corner.
It
could have been worse but in the end the Whites had no excuses,
well beaten by the better team on the night.
