Glenavon Res 1 Lisburn Distillery Seconds 1 (HT 0-1)

Match Report from David Taylor The LIne-up

The Whites started well, creating good chances, especially down the wings with Cooling and Cavanagh firing in crosses, which sooner or later the front two would have to convert.

As time wore on, Mercer, Bell and Cooling all had their chances, three headers over the crossbar, and then Patton failed to put away a great through ball from Catney. Pressure on the home defence, saw them eventually crack, when Cooling, put away down the right by Bell, sent in a hard low cross which hit a defender and went in at the near post to give them a deserved opener.

The Whites were now dominant, and in total control, with Bell and Catney running the middle, and the wide men causing havoc for the home defence, but failure to put away the plentiful chances was to cost them dearly in the end. Then with five minutes left in the half, a poorly timed tackle in the box resulted in a penalty being awarded, but Wilton made a fine save, diving to his right and pushing a low ball round the post for a fruitless corner.

The second half saw the home side take control, as the Whites struggled to find their rhythm of the first half, and when a poor free kick for the Whites was punted up front, the two central defenders went for the same ball, and it broke to an unmarked forward, who stoked the ball past Wilton, even though he got a hand to it, and it went in at the far post. Even though we had chances, another header over the bar, and two good twenty-yard shots on target, we were fortunate not to concede any more goals, thanks to some good keeping by Wilton.

Manager's Comments

First half we were superb, with Bell and Catney, feeding the wide men Cooling and Cavanagh, and our back four solid as a rock, but for some reason or other we could not produce the same quality football in the second half, and were grateful to come away with a draw.

Perhaps we were over-confident, after the way we played in the first, and thought we were just going to win at a canter, but the chances missed in the first period, and they were numerous, were to come back and haunt us in the second.
