Match Report from David Taylor The LIne-up

On a cold, miserable, winter’s night, both teams started brightly, but it was the home side that took an early lead in the tenth minute. Poor defending allowed an attacker in to score from close range, but it was not long before the Whites equalised.

Ssome good play down the right by Cavanagh and Neill, allowed the latter to send in a cross which was converted into a goal by Murphy. More good football from the Whites set up Cooling, but from six yards out, and only the keeper to beat, he managed to put an easy chance over the home crossbar.

Not to be denied, he made amends for this miss, when he scored, after good work by Murphy on the left flank gave him a golden opportunity, to make it 2-1 to the Whites. Unfortunately, from a Whites' corner, the home team broke away and with the visitors’ lone defender left up against two attackers, they scored an undeserved equaliser. The Whites continued to push forward and with five minutes left to the break, Magee was pushed in the box, and the referee awarded a penalty, which Mercer slotted home with a good strike, to let the visitors go in with a one goal lead at half time.

The home team struck back with two goals in a five minute period as the Whites failed to strike the form of the first half, and were struggling to stay in the game. But fortunately Murphy showed his class with a well taken equaliser with fifteen minutes left on the clock.

The visitors were now back in the game and with five minutes remaining, Murphy again struck a beauty into the top left hand corner of the net, when he swivelled on the edge of the box and gave the home keeper no chance with his left foot shot, to give the Whites three good away points.

Manager's Comments

A cracking game of football, on a bad night, and the sprinkling of spectators must have been glad they braved the elements, which saw the Whites just manage to secure a valuable away win.

For the Whites, our defence was not up to their usual standard, they have conceded seven goals in our last two games, and will have to tighten up if we are to stay in the hunt for a top spot. Midfield battled hard, but up front they had Man of the Match, Francis Murphy, who scored a hat trick and worked his socks off for the team, he had a super game which should see him back with the firsts this Saturday.
