Match Report from David Taylor The LIne-up

This was always going to be a hard fought encounter, with both sides fielding first team players, five for the Whites and six for DC, and so it was, as both sides provided good entertainment for the small crowd of supporters.

The Whites almost opened the scoring in the third minute, when Johnston fired in a strong shot that went just wide off Spackman’s post, but the home team responded when Duff finished off a sweet DC move by firing in a shot which rebounded of a defender and over the top of the net.

The home team were causing lots of problems for the visitors, and keeper McCluskey had to be in top form, as he made three super saves, the first from McDonald when he clawed away a fierce shot for a corner, then a double save as he blocked a shot with his legs and as a home forward closed in, palmed the ball away for another corner. The home side continued to look sharper, but they were grateful to keeper Spackman, who pushed away Waterworth’s shot, and then on a one to one with Martin, again came to DC’s rescue.

The second half restarted in the same vein, with McCluskey going down to low to stop a strong twenty-yard drive from McDonald, and Spackman spread himself brilliantly to save, when Martin broke through. On the hour Spackman blotted his copybook, when he pulled down Martin in the box, and he picked himself up and beat the keeper with a low shot into the right hand corner. Waterworth and Martin were a real handful for the home defence and could have added to the Whites score, as they were now the dominant team.

Manager's Comments

The old adage, a game of two halves, was well suited to this game, Dc were on top in the first half, as we gave them too much room in the middle of the park, and they created a lot of half chances. The second half saw the visitor’s defence maintaining a high line, not allowing the home midfield to have the space they had in the first half, and this allowed Johnston and Catney to deliver the quality of ball that the front two needed. We deserved to win a really hard fought game, a very good win, with everyone playing their part, special mention to young Chris McCluskey, a seventeen year old, who in only his second match had an outstanding game, and in my opinion was “man of the match”.
