Lisburn Distillery Seconds 2 Glenavon Res 2 (HT 1-1 )

Match Report from David Taylor The LIne-up

The first half was closely contested, but Glenavon just shaded it, in that they were always quicker to the ball and used it much more effectively, whereas the Whites were sporadic in their play and looked a little uneasy against their visitors.

As luck would have it, the home side took the lead on the half hour mark, when Waterworth scored from close range, but unfortunately the Whites could not hold on to this lead until half time, and the visitors hit back with a superb strike from Paul Walsh from fully twenty five yards.

The second half saw the Whites gain the upper hand in midfield, with Johnston taking charge, ably assisted by Cooling, and the Whites again took the lead when Waterworth finished off a sweet move down the right. But again the visitors hit back with a decidedly suspicious looking goal, the referee allowing a player who appeared offside to run on and slide the ball past the home keeper.

Undeterred the home side pushed forward and were unlucky not to take the lead, when a corner was sent in, Magee smacked the ball against the crossbar with his effort, and then the rebound fell to Brannigan and his overhead shot also struck the crossbar and was hacked clear by an overworked defence.

Then Brannigan had a header cleared off the line by the fullback, and Mercer should have scored when he was put clear, but his well-struck shot was off target, with only the keeper to beat. Try as they did the Whites could not find the winner their play deserved.

Manager's Comments

This was two points lost rather than one gained, as we dominated the second half, after struggling the first. The back four, disrupted by suspension and first team call ups, looked a little shaky in the first half but settled in the second. Johnston and Cooling took control in the second half and really ran the show, and up front Waterworth, again showed why he must be considered for a first team place with a two goal display, and he was ably assisted by Brannigan, who had no luck in front of goal.
