Match Report

from Stan Mann

In a line .......Managers' Views

A four nil defeat and the fourth time the Whites have lost to the Reds this season.

The Whites though were very much the architects of their own downfall and let the visitors go ahead on six minutes. With Stuart Thompson and Michael Ferguson both out suspended, Ryan Catney was filling in at left back and what should have been a simple back-pass ended up going away from the keeper and Vincent Sweeney had the easy task of running in to put the ball past Phil Matthews.

The Whites then appeared to be getting back into things, but in reality it was little more than a false dawn and Sweeney notched up his second on 26 minutes.

Completely unmarked, he had the easy task of heading home from a corner that evaded the Whites defence, keeper included. Maybe the sun was in the defenders' eyes, but it certainly disappeared off the horizon on 35 minutes when Catney was ordered off following his challenge on the Reds number eleven. Gary Kennedy. That's a left-back red carded now for the second match running!

Although James Bell did have the ball in the net in the second half, the game was well over.

Cliftonville also had a goal ruled out (Sweeney netted again) and the game looked to be running the clock down. The Whites were pushing the ball about, neither keeper troubled until Cliftonville punished the Whites in the final five minutes.

Substitute Daniel Lyons, Whites shirts around him, thumped the ball home on 85 minutes, and as the defence opened up he ran forward to net his second and Cliftonville's fourth in the 87th minute.

Matthews made a late save after that to keep out a fifth, but as someone remarked, 'a game best forgotten about'. The Whites now need to ensure that they bounce back against Glenavon in next week's JJB Irish Cup.

Paul Kirk - Lisburn Distillery

'I thought there was a lack of energy, we made bad decisions, it was just a dreadful, dreadful first-half performance'

Eddie Patterson - Cliftonville

'The game was over, the sending off dictated that and at two-up I think that we took our foot off the gas but I have to say credit to Distillery in the second half. They came out and we found it difficult to get into our stride.'
