Match Report

from Stan Mann

In a line .......Managers' Views

'We're better than this' came the cry from the stand some twenty minutes into this game after Portadown had bossed the early party of this game, yet, they never really looked like hurting the Whites.

Stuart Thompson was alert on 15 minutes as he cleared a cross before it could reach Ports' striker Gary McCutcheon. Two minutes the Ports' left full-back Keith O'Hara swung a low ball to the edge of the box but Richard Clarke's volley flew high and over.

On twenty minutes former Whites player Gareth McKeown got in before Wayne Buchanan could get his head to Francis Murphy's corner.Waterworth then broke to the bye-line but his cross eluded everyone and then the Whites took the lead on 28 minutes.

James Bell's shot was kept out by Kevin Pressman but Darren Armour got in ahead of Henry McStay to lash the ball home.Waterworth then beat several men before slipping the ball to Bell but his shot went wide.

Back came Portadown, a Peter Kennedy cross eluded everyone and just before the break Ports striker Kevin Braniff saw his shot blocked by Thompson.

On 59 minutes Muir and Buchanan managed to clear a long throw from McKeown but Wesley Boyle directed a header wide of the goal and that proved costly. Murphy then sent a great ball into the centre of the goal and Armour showed his class to head past Pressman on 68 minutes.

Substitute Gary Liggett then wasted a good opportunity for the Ports before the game fizzled out, although in injury time Marc McCann lifted an effort of target.

Another good win for the Whites, up to sixth, Irish Cup, Intertoto and Setanta places very much there still to play for - the season is far from over!

        Paul Kirk - Lisburn Distillery

'I thought we were superb second half, I thought that we kept the ball brilliantly and we showed what we were about. We were resilient defensively and we can play when we have the ball and I am so proud of the day and the result has made my day and has helped me in terms of what I am going through.

   Ronnie McFall - Portadown

'It's the old adage, if you don't score games you don't win games, I think that we had more chances than what Distillery did over the ninety minutes but we didn't take them "
