Summary
from Peter Cooling
The
Under 16s began their League campaign with a game against
Sunnyside at Suffolk. After going a goal behind early on they
began to play their way back into the game and were rewarded
with an equalliser just before half time when a Craig Cooling
shot rattled off the crossbar and Chris Adams was on hand
to score from the rebound.
Although
they dominated for long spells in the second half the Whites
were unable to grab a winner, the final score was 1-1. A special
mention has to be made to full back Neil Thompson who had
an outstanding game.

For
the second week in succession the Under 16s conceded a last
minute penalty which Lisburn Youth gratefully accepted to
win the game 1-0. A series of missed chances and their inability
to keep the ball at any stage of the game helped to contribute
to what was a lack lustre performance by the young Whites.

The
Under 16s battled hard to overcome a very aggressive Lurgan
Town side and after a goalless first half took the lead
10 minutes into the second period. A powerful run down the
right from the impressive Tommy Roy ended with his cross
being hammered home by Craig Cooling. With the Whites now
in control it was no surprise when Craig Cooling scored
again with an excellent solo effort after good work by Grant
Davis.
Once again a good solid performance with the back four of

Saturday when they were defeated 4-2 by Glenavon, who dominated

After
a scrappy first ten minutes the Whites began to take control
of the game. However after a period of sustained pressure
they were caught napping when a Ballymena counter attack ended
up in the back of the net after some sloppy defending. Their
response though was rapid and within minutes Cain McEvoy had
grabbed the equaliser after some excellent play by Johnny
McIlvenny down the left flank.
Half
- Time 1-1.
The
Whites began the second half strongly and it was no surprise
when Johnny Armstong got on the end of a McIlvenny corner
to beat the keeper with an unstoppable header at the front
post. But once again they pushed the self destruct button
and allowed Ballymena back into the game with a very soft
goal but this week they weren't prepared to settle for second
best and Dan McFadden grabbed a deserved winner when he controlled
a pinpoint pass from keeper Dean Smyth to beat the onrushing
keeper from close range.

Two
identical defensive errors in a five minute spell in the second
half cost the Whites this game. Even opponents Midway Utd
appeared stunned at the ease with which they stole the game
after being totally outplayed by a slick moving Distillery
side for the majority of the game. The first half somehow
ended 0-0 with Whites keeper Chris Stewart not having one
save to make.
Brian Davey put the Whites ahead ten minutes into the second
with a clever free kick from twenty yards and they appeared
to be on their way to a well deserved victory but shortly
afterwards the two shambolic errors occurred and try as they
did the Whites were unable to retrieve a self inflicted situation.

Summary

The
U16s defeated Lisburn Youth at Fullerton Park on Saturday
in what was a very entertaining game.
The
Whites went ahead midway through the first half when Chris
Adams was on hand to put the finishing touch to a fine move. This
was followed five minutes later with a 30-yard strike from
Dan McFadden which gave the Lisburn Youth keeper no chance
as it rifled into the top corner of the net.
The
second half began with the Whites well on top but after a
short spell of pressure by the opposition they conceded a
goal. After missing several gilt edge chances they were desperately
unlucky to concede again in the last minute of normal time
to take the game to extra time. With neither team unable to
break the deadlock the game was decided on penalties with
the Whites emerging as worthy winners to face Crusaders in
the next round. Penalty scorers were Ryan Ennis, Brian Davey,
Tommy Roy, Andrew Cooling, Jonny Armstrong, Michael Fox and
Cain McEvoy with goalkeeper Dean Smyth pulling off three superb
saves.

The
16s defeated Ballyclare Comrades by three goals to one at
Suffolk on Saturday. Although the pitch was in a terrible
state the young Whites still managed to play some wonderful
football creating chance after chance in a first half where
the opposition were restricted to only one shot on goal. Michael
Foster put the Whites ahead shortly before half time when
he hammered the ball into the roof of the net.
Half
Time 1-0
The
second half began with the Whites pressing hard for a second
and it wasn't long coming when Tommy Roy's header was saved
by the goalkeeper and the same player was on hand to hammer
home the rebound.
A
brief lapse of concentration allowed Ballyclare to pull back
what was a very soft goal but Johnny Millar secured the three
points when his long looping shot from 30 yards caught the
keeper napping.
Once
again an excellent all round performance.

Report
from Peter Cooling
After
missing two open goals in the first five minutes the day began
to get steadily worse for an Under 16 side that looked totally
out of sorts. With passes going astray coupled with a total
lack of ideas it came as no shock when Banbridge took the
lead shortly before half time. The goal gave Banbridge a real
boost of confidence and it was they that finshed the half
looking the stronger side.
The
second half began with the Whites having the strong wind in
their backs but they struggled to take advantage of this with
too many passes being overhit and all the instuctions of keeping
the ball into feet appearing to have gone right over their
heads. On one rare assault on the Banbridge goal Patrick Docherty
found space in the box and hammered the ball home from six
yards to equalise.
However rather than spurring the Whites on to victory the
goal had an adverse effect and after a period of Banbridge
pressure they scored a deserved late winner.
This was a poor performance on a day when we lacked composure
on the ball all round the pitch. We failled to control the
game and in consequence allowed ourselves to be controlled
by the opposition for long spells. Well done Banbridge.

The
Whites came out on top in this hard fought quarter-final battle
with Crusaders at Ballymacoss on Saturday. They took the lead
after ten minutes when Andy Cooling slid the ball through
to Ryan Ennis who finished clinically from six yards.
After
surviving a near miss at the other end which required a superb
save from Chris Stewart the Whites were unlucky not to score
again when Brian Davey went on a run from the halfway line
only to see his shot parried by the Crusaders goalkeeper and
Johnny Hill went close from the follow up.Tommy Roy also went
close with a fierce low drive which just went inches wide.
Half
Time 1-0
The
second half continued very much like the first with the Whites
always looking the most likely team to score but disaster
struck with only one minute remaining when Crusaders somehow
managed to bundle the ball over the goal line for a late equalliser
to take the game to extra time.
With no further goals scored in extra time both teams braced
themselves for the dreaded penalties in which the Whites came
out on top. Brian Davey, Michael Foster, Dan McFadden and
Craig Cooling all hit the target with goalkeeper Chris Stewart
making two wonderful saves.
This was an excellent performance from everyone involved to
take us into the semi-final where we will play Newmills who

long range efforts on goal which goalkeeper Dean Smyth was
able to deal with comfortably. After several chances had been
spurned Brian Davey sealed the victory when he worked a one
- two with Jonny McIlvenny to coolly finish from six yards.
This was a deserved victory in which everyone worked hard
together. We were composed when we had possession and worked
hard to prevent the opposition settling on the ball but most
importantly we enjoyed the game. Well done lads.

The
unpredictable U16s found themselves on the wrong end of a
6-1 thrashing by League leaders Linfield at a cold and wet
Ballymacoss on Saturday.Linfield controlled the game from
start to finish and thoroughly deserved their victory. A late
consolation goal from Johnny Hill was the only time in the
whole game that the Linfield goalkeeper was troubled.
On the day we were totally outclassed by a very good Linfield
side. It was disappointing on several occasions throughout
the game to see Lisburn Distillery players openly blaming
their team mates to cover up for their own deficiencies, in
contrast to last week were we were very much together as a
unit.
Along with our lack of imagination and our failure to compete,
this was a huge contributory factor to our downfall on the
day.
Overall Johnny Armstrong (Silky) was by far our best player.
He was composed on the ball and battled hard against a super
Linfield frontline.

The
Under 16s somehow managed to turn what should have been a
comfortable win into a 2-2 draw against Lurgan Town. Leading
2-0 with three quarters of the game gone they simply surrendered
their lead following what can only be described as two shambolic
pieces of defending. This unfortunately marred what had up
to that point been an excellent display by the young Whites.
Johnny McIlvenny scored both the goals.

Although
they totally dominated the game the U16s once again found
themselves on the wrong side of the 2-0 final score-line.
Although they created numerous chances throughout the game
the Whites were unable to find the net and found themselves
caught by two sucker punches late on.
Johnny
Hill was once again outstanding on the right while the two
front men Brian Davey and Johnny McIlvenny combined well to
create many chances but unfortunately neither of them could
score on the night. At the other end Craig Cooling stepped
into centre back in the abscence of Johnny Armstrong and immediately
formed a solid partnership with Michael Foster who also had
an excellent game.

The
U16s earned a creditable 1-1 draw against Glentoran. After
conceding a sloppy early goal they played thier way back into
the game and were unlucky not to come away with all three
points.
Cian
McEvoy got the goal with only seconds of the game remaining.
After a shaky start the Whites finished the game strongly
with Chris Adams shining in midfield.
Everyone at the 16's would like to congratulate the 18's
on their wonderful achievement of winning the Harry Cavan
Cup. Well done to Andy and everyone else involved.

The
Under 16s travelled to Loughside to face Crusaders on Saturday
and were beaten 3-0 in what was undoubtedly thier worst performance
of the season so far. On the day we appeared to show little
or no self belief and consequently we were totally outplayed
by an average Crusaders side.

On
Wednesday night following several personnel changes the Whites
took to the field to face a full strength Linfield side and
showed that on their day they are a match for any team in
their League.
They
battled hard throughout and were unlucky not to go in at the
break ahead. With both teams battling for supremacy in the
second half the Blues created a couple of chances but found
Whites' goalkeeper Dean Smyth in superb form. At the other
end the Whites also went close. At this point it looked as
though the game was going to end scoreless but with five minutes
remaining Linfield took the lead. However the Whites weren't
prepared to accept defeat and grabbed a late equalliser when
Brian Davey fired home from the penalty spot.

The
Under 16s drew 1-1 with Loughgall in a game which they should
have won quite comfortably. A plethora of missed chances sent
Loughgall home not believing their luck. Dan McFadden scored
for the Whites.
