Shea
is on target as brown gets first victory
GLENAVON
finally got their first win of the season under manager Jimmy
Brown.
A
windswept pitch made good football impossible but that will not
matter to the Lurgan Blues or Shea Campbell in particular, whose
super first half strike proved the difference in the end.
Glenavon
had an opportunity to take the lead after five minutes; Campbell
pulled the ball across the area but Marty Verner miscued from
15 yards out.
Nine
minutes later the visitors were in front; Campbell turned past
Chris Coffey and Ryan McCann deflected Campbell's cross past his
own keeper.
Distillery
had several chances to pull one back.
James
Willis' header dropped just over the bar, Andy Kilmartin saw his
drive flash over but John Martin had their best chance earlier,
on 14 minutes.
Put
through by Willis, Martin was one on one with Andy McDonald but
the keeper won out.
On
29 minutes Glenavon increased their lead thanks to a gem of a
finish from Campbell.
Verner
created the opportunity and Campbell sent a 20 yard screamer beyond
the reach of Phil Matthews.
Two
minutes before the break, McDonald had to push a goal-bound effort
from Francis Murphy around the post.
Murphy
got the home side back into things in first half injury time after
being upended in the penalty box.
Darren
Armour converted the resultant penalty.
On
55 minutes, Martin's shot was easily held by McDonald before Conor
Walsh sent a long range effort over the Whites crossbar four minutes
later.
Gerard
McMahon then came close to putting Glenavon further ahead on 63
minutes.
He
latched on to a poor clearance from Matthews and from the edge
of the centre circle, he thumped the ball straight back towards
goal with Matthews saving.
On
78 minutes Matthews again made a superb save to tip a drive from
Kieran O'Connor on to the post.
