Whites finally get off the mark
THREE
second-half goals gave Paul Kirk's side their first league points
of the season as the Whites continued their recent upsurge in
form.
After
booking their place in the last four of the CIS Cup, Distillery
dispatched a Newry side who have not won in their last three to
move level with them in the table.
The
defeat ensures caretaker manager Raymond Byrne ends his short
tenure on a low note as the club hope to name Roy Mc-Cready's
successor this week.
The
visitors made the more purposeful start.
Striker
Darren Armour's shot blazed over the bar from six yards after
just 30 seconds.
Newry
were dealt a blow early on when Alan Murphy limped off injured
after 15 minutes.
Distillery
continued on the front foot and Wayne Buchanan's snap-shot from
inside the box fizzed just over the bar.
Both
sides struggled to get any closer for the rest of the half.
But
the second period was only two minutes old before the visitors
took the lead.
Darren
Armour broke down the left before crossing for Andrew Dickson
who deflected his shot from his knee past Robin-son.
It
was the Newry goalkeeper who prevented Distillery doubling that
lead a minute later as he made a point blank save from Damien
McLoughlin.
Newry
had their next chance to equalise on 56 minutes when Damien Curran's
low drive from a freekick was saved by Matthews only to fall into
the path of Damien Whitehead but he managed to scoop the ball
over the bar from four yards out.
Distillery
all but wrapped up the points on 70 minutes when Darren Armour
latched onto a long Matthews clearance and finished coolly past
the keeper to make it 2-0.
The
Whites grabbed their third on 88 minutes when Andrew Kilmartin
broke clear of the Newry defence, rounded the keeper, and stroked
the ball into the net.
