200210 – Well done to Distillery Supporters’ Trust walkers
The weather may have played havoc with the fixture schedule again but it didn’t stop the Distillery Supporters Trust (DST) sponsored walk from the site of old Grosvenor Park in Belfast to New Grosvenor Stadium, Lambeg, today.
More than 20 walkers (pictured below) completed the walk, raising welcome funds for the club in the process.
The leaders completed the walk in just under two hours and “thanks and well done” to each and every one of them.
The DST would also like to thank the staff at the Grosvenor Leisure Centre for their welcome and hospitality at the start of the walk.
Despite the troubled times off the pitch, there is no doubt that those who genuinely support this club are prepared to stand by it and do what they can to ensure that this famous Irish League football club continues its’ long and proud history.
The next event in the DST calendar is the Quiz at New Grosvenor this Friday night

251109 – Carling presents “Evening of Legends” – event summary
Carling presented a thoroughly enjoyable “Evening of Legends” in the Lisburn Distillery Social Club tonight, Wednesday 25 November 2009.
The “Legends” panel consisted of former player and manager Roy Welsh, goalkeeper Phil Matthews, striker Glenn Ferguson and manager Tommy Wright. The event was presented by the inimitable Jackie Fullerton, a familiar face at Lisburn Distillery Annual Dinners in recent years.
Roy Welsh was first on the bill and he chatted to Jackie about his time at the club,
the championship winning team of 62-
Phil then chatted about his time at the club and how much it had meant to him personally
over the last nine seasons before Glenn gave an account of his phenomenal career
after being shown the door by Ards as a 19 year-
Manager Tommy Wright was next to be interviewed and he spoke about his time at Norwich and Shamrock Rovers, his plans on this season and future ambitions of turning the side back into a top six team again including developing the youth structure to bring players through the club.
Questions were posed by members of the audience and the panel responded accordingly.
Several questions were put to Tommy about what would happen if the club was relegated and his answer first time around was quite clear – “We are going to stay up, we are not going to get relegated” said the Whites’ boss.
On being asked about life at Lisburn Distillery compared to Linfield, Glenn responded in his reply that he “was enjoying the challenge; if we do stay it will be one of the good things of my career.”
Phil looked at Glenn when asked who one of his toughest opponents was and also revealed his most memorable game for the Whites was against Armagh City in April 2002, the last game of the season and a day when the Whites returned to Premier football on winning the First Division title.
And Bertie McMinn was Roy’s choice for the best player during hiss time in the club, our former legend adding that he had played alongside many good players such as John Kennedy and Kenny Hamilton, but Bertie was right up there and above the others in terms of skills.
There were photograph and autograph opportunities with the Gibson Cup also present and we thank Carling for an enjoyable, professional and slick event and their league sponsorship. We hope the event will be held in future years again in conjunction with them.

221109 – Successful dinner raises funds for Youth Academy
“An enjoyable night – a real football night” was how guest speaker Dr Malcolm Brodie MBE summed up Friday night’s dinner in the Lisburn Distillery Social Club.
The event’ organised by the supporters clubs, was to raise funds for the flourishing
Lisburn Distillery Youth Academy. That aim was achieved with around £800 being raised
from the event -
Exactly 129 years to the day that Distillery held their first ever training session, it was fitting that club historian Dawson Simpson kicked off proceedings with a short history of those early years.
MC Ivan Martin then chatted to Malcolm Brodie about memories of the Whites and their history, the latter reflecting on Grosvenor Park and a host of memories – the ground itself and the Whites’ help to Glentoran in forties, James Magennis VC, the famous floodlit games against Burnley and other sides and the greats who turned out for the Whites – Jack Rowley and George Eastham amongst many.
Ivan followed that up by chatting to guest Ferris Lunn about his time at the club in the fifties (78 goals in 193 appearances) and Ferris certainly had the audience’s attention when he explained how injuries were treated in those days!
Kenny Hamilton and Roy Welsh then chatted to Ivan about the Irish League Championship winning side (62/63) under George Eastham before Peter Watson and Alan McCarroll reflected on the late sixties and that 1971 cup winning side.
Lisburn Distillery manager Tommy Wright ended off the interviews giving his views on progress to date and his aims for the rest of the season.
An auction and ballot concluded a successful evening and we thank Terry Thompson and Bobby Radcliffe for their hard work in organising the event, and the caterers for a very enjoyable meal on the night.

041109 – Stephen Shaw leaves Whites
Stephen Shaw has unfortunately had to call time on his Irish League career due to work commitments across the water.
There had been a possibility that “Shawsy” (pictured left) would play in last night's game at Windsor Park but this did not happen meaning his last appearance was against Coleraine last Saturday.
He made 45 appearances after joining the Whites from Crusaders in late August 2007. He scored one goal, that being against Institute in the side’s first league win in early October and it may well prove vital in the Whites' battle for survival.
We thank him for his contribution at the club and wish him all the best for the future
Another player who also left Lisburn Distillery recently was keeper Paul Murphy. We also wish Paul well in the future too.

291009 Sir Tom piece added to Memorabilia Display
Hopefully you have had a look in at the Memorabilia Display on your visit to New Grosvenor. Situated in the club shop, everyone is warmly welcome to come in and share the rich heritage of this famous club.
The display continues to grow and former player Derek Meldrum added another item in the form of a superb framed image covering Sir Tommy Finney’s appearance for the Whites in 1963 against Benfica. The item carries Sir Tom’s signature.
It was presented to Derek following a special event to mark Sir Tom’s birthday earlier
this year – we have reproduced an article by David Hunter on the event below -
We thank him sincerely for that and the framed image will go on display at New Grosvenor shortly.

Derek Meldrum - It’s funny how things stick in your mind. I think back to the end of the eighties
and the the short-
That answer was spot on, and whilst Sir Tom was eighty-
The Preston North End and England legend sat down along with some 500 guests and dignitaries that included Dungannon man Derek Meldrum. Derek played for the Whites against Barcelona and he didn’t answer the question on Sportsmasters, he had no need to for he also had have the privilege of playing alongside Tom Finney on that special night at Windsor Park in the European Cup on 25th September 1963 against the mighty Benfica, a side that included “The Black Pearl”, Eusébio – 727 goals in 715 games tells its’ own tale.
The result for a crowd of just over 20,000 was an incredible 3-
“It certainly was a surprise!” said Derek. “We met him on the day of the match, he came into the changing room and Eastham took it upon himself to make him captain and encourage us a bit more. Everybody was just in awe of the situation when he appeared and the thought of then playing the mighty Benfica. It was just hard to take in what was ahead of us but Eastham himself was a great motivator.”
Finney had retired from his beloved Preston in 1960, and his Distillery colleague that night summed “The Preston Plumber” up succinctly. “I would describe him as a shy retiring person” he said; “and certainly very modest and although George Eastham introduced him you knew who he was when he walked through the door. He had a certain air about him, yet he was so modest. Whilst he hadn’t been playing for a few years it was just an inspiration to know that he was there with us. Distillery was a good side to play in, it was easy to play, it was all push and run football and that was the style of football that George Eastham brought to the club”.
It was a memorable night for Irish League football, one of the greatest results of all time for an Irish League side and Meldrum recalled it vividly adding; “It was a dreadful night, it lashed down with rain but that was probably to our benefit and we got off to a flying start by scoring early on in the game and that helped us to settle down It really was a fantastic night and a fantastic experience but the result really just made it for everyone.”
The Whites took the lead within the first minute through John Kennedy before Serafin
equalised but Eastham’s side went in 2-
“It was a truly great result” reflected Derek, “that Benfica side would have had the bulk of the Portuguese national team that later came to England and did so well in the 1966 World Cup.” And it did, no less than five of the team were in the Portugal squad that finished in third place in the 1966 World Cup.
Finney did not play in the away leg in the famous “Estádio da Luz” (Stadium of Light) as Derek went on to explain; “One of the reasons he played for George Eastham was that he played for Preston North End for all of his career and they played in white, he played for England who played in white and then for Distillery who played in white. But he had made up his mind beforehand that he would only play one game.”
Distillery lost the away leg 5-
We met Sir Tom, had a great dinner and there was a charity auction where a bust of Sir Tom sold for around £15,000! Many players were presented to the audience and asked questions about Sir Tom; I was called up on stage and asked about the night he played for Distillery.
Mark Lawrenson, Sir Trevor Brooking, Gordon Taylor Howard Wilkinson and David Pleat were just some of the many names there – it was fantastic just to be there and see them, I thoroughly enjoyed it.’
For the record, the sides that on that amazing September night were;
Distillery: Jack Kennedy, D. Meldrum, Patterson, John Kennedy, Gregg, Ellison, Anderson, Campbell, Finney (captain), J Meldrum, Hamilton.
Benfica: Pereira, Cavem, Raul, Cruz, Germano, Humberto, Yacua, Eusébio, Coluna, Serafin, Simoes.

Tommy Wright is the new manager of Lisburn Distillery Football Club. His appointment was confirmed after today’s game against Crusaders.
The forty-
Tommy has already confirmed his backroom team will consist of John Cunningham (assistant manager), Jim Hagan (coach) and Iam McFaul (scout). Tommy managed Limavady United and then Ballymena United before moving on to become goalkeeping coach at Norwich City in May of last year. He then filled a similar role with Shamrock Rovers from February 2009..
When asked for his message for Lisburn Distillery fans, his response was; “ The important thing is that they keep behind the team, keep supporting the team. I know that it has been a difficult time for everybody but I took over Limavady in a similar if not worse situation and no disrespect to Limavady but when I took over there they probably didn't have the squad of players that is available to me at Lisburn Distillery. That doesn't mean to say it is going to be any easier so all I would say is stay behind the team and give them your full support and we will turn it round. There are plenty of games to go but we also realise that it is not going to be easy and hopefully (we can get the points).Too many people at this club have worked too hard to get the facilities at this club and to get this club in the Premier league to be challenging for the top four (spots) and it is important that we stay in the league.”

Club chairman Jim McGrory and Jimmy Brown, who was appointed manager on 19 May 2009, spoke on Friday afternoon when the agreement to part company was made. The chairman speaking later on Friday night said; “"We have to get that first win and move off the bottom of the table. We had nine players from the team that finished fourth last season and we added six more experienced players to that squad,"
“We are very disappointed that things have not worked out" he added. “Jimmy Brown put in a lot of hard work in the short time he was here and it is always sad when situations like this arise. We will move on and look for a new manager but in the interim period Tony Gorman and Harry Fay will take charge of the team for the game at Coleraine on Tuesday night."

210709 IFA UNVEILS CARLING AS NEW PREMIERSHIP SPONSOR
THE Irish Football Association today unveiled Carling as the new sponsor of the top tier of domestic football in Northern Ireland. The Carling Premiership, which kicks off on Saturday August 8, marks a significant investment for the beer brand in local football with a three year deal worth close to a quarter of a million pounds, the highest level of investment in the local league's history. As well as a guaranteed £80,000 per year, Carling has also committed significant additional marketing support aimed at broadening interest in local football and boosting attendances at league games. Such support includes the introduction of a new website www.carlingpremiership.com where fans can check out news updates, results, match reports, fixtures and statistics. The new look site went live at 11.15am today.
Niall Phelan of Carling said he was looking forward to working with the IFA in the seasons ahead. "Today marks an important milestone in the history of Carling's long standing association with football at all levels," said Phelan. "As a brand, Carling is very passionate about the game so we're thrilled to have this opportunity to sponsor Northern Ireland's elite football division and work closely with the IFA, the clubs and, importantly, the fans to grow interest in the league and in local football as a whole. "The Premiership is a fantastic league which mixes skill and excitement with guts and passion, but like all leagues, it would be nothing without the fans who cheer on their teams every week and support them through thick and thin," he continued.
"At Carling, we're football fans ourselves and it is our goal to be football fans'
beer of choice when they goes for a pre- "We look forward to an exciting new season and to working closely with the IFA to develop the Carling Premiership in the weeks, months and years ahead," concluded Phelan.
IFA president Raymond Kennedy welcomed the league's new sponsor. "The announcement of a new title sponsor for the Premiership in Northern Ireland is an important event for the IFA," said Mr Kennedy. "This season we're particularly excited to welcome Carling on board, a brand with a fantastic football pedigree and one that has done so much for the sport at the highest level. "We are confident that the brand will be more than just a title sponsor and we welcome their input and assistance in helping us to develop not only the Premiership but football in Northern Ireland. We'd like to wish all 12 teams the best of luck for the coming season and look forward to celebrating with the winners of the first Carling Premiership next May," he added. Hugh Wade, vice chairman of the IFA Premiership Management Committee, acknowledged Carling's commitment to football in Northern Ireland. "This sponsorship deal is great news for football in Northern Ireland and the investment is greatly appreciated by the 12 clubs involved" he said.
"We've seen the impact that Carling has had on the League Cup in England, which has enjoyed tremendous growth in terms of interest and prestige, and we look forward with anticipation that our partnership can have a similar impact at local level." As part of today's announcement, the new Carling Premiership logo was unveiled, which
will feature on all relevant promotional material and marketing campaigns, including
48 sheet billboards throughout Northern Ireland, bus shelter advertising, press and
radio advertising, viral marketing, websites and monthly e-
Sky Sports will once again feature five live Carling Premiership matches during the season, the first of which will be the Cliftonville v Linfield game on the evening of Monday September 21.
The Premiership sponsorship is a major addition to Carling's existing high profile football links, which include the shirt sponsorship of Glasgow giants Celtic and Rangers, as well as the Carling Cup in England, a competition that has enjoyed a massive resurgence in recent years.

And then with six minutes to go before the break, complete disaster as the Whites

Two minutes later on 44 minutes, the first half ended with Gelashivili firing home a good drive from just outside the box after a good interchange of passes.
It remained four nil up until the final three minutes of play when substitute Benashivli
