090410 - Tommy Wright is Wright for Manager of the Month award

The Northern Ireland Football Writers’ Association got it absolutely Wright when it came to their choice for the March 2010 Manager of the Month.

In football terms it was a “penalty kick” for the writers because quite simply Tommy Wright’s record in March spoke for itself and equally importantly he got the club off the bottom of the Carling Premiership after they had been there since the 08th August 2009 – the opening day of the season!

Five consecutive defeats, including a narrow one at Solitude at the start of the month were banished with a superb run of thirteen points from a possible fifteen.

The goals started to flow as well with wins over Coleraine, Institute, Portadown and Newry combined with a fighting come-back to draw with Crusaders.

"I accept this award on behalf of my team after what has been a terrific month for us," said Tommy, adding; “The boys have grouped together and are going in the right direction."

Tommy also paid tribute to assistant manager John Cunningham, and Reggie Hillen.

There could be no more fitting winner for the March award especially when you consider you how difficult things have been at the club this season.

Well done “ Tommy Wright Wright Wright” from everyone at Lisburn Distillery.

010210 – Domestic Licence Update

A lot of very hard work has been going on behind the scenes in the last few weeks with regards to the club’s Domestic Licence application for the 2010-2011 season.

The Sporting, Personnel and Legal parts of the application have all been submitted to the IFA before the 01st February deadline.

Out thanks go to Ashley Wragg, Gary Cressey and everyone else involved in the process so far.

Paul (pictured left) signed forms today and his contract will run to the end of the current season. He re-joins the club from Ballymena United and now looks to add to his 202 appearances and 15 goals scored in a memorable six and a half-years since he first joined the club from Crusaders in the summer of 2003

We welcome Paul back to New Grosvenor

300110 – Nash, Kelly and Curran join the Whites

Manager Tommy Wright has also added three more new faces to the playing squad and we extend a warm welcome to Aaron Nash, Mark Kelly and John Curran.

No further signings are expected.

300110 “Right decision by ref” says Tommy

Another frustrating afternoon following the late postponement of the game at Portadown.

Whilst Lisburn Distillery boss Tommy Wright like everyone else was disappointed at the late call-off, he backed the officials’ decision adding; ““I have every sympathy with the referee, the pitch wasn’t playable. Trevor Moutray and his officials made the correct decision; the area of the pitch concerned was hard, it would have been difficult for the goalkeepers and neither of them was happy, had it been another area of the pitch you might possibly have got away with it.”

We will bring you details of the re-arranged date in due course.

300110 – Walsh and Whelan leave Whites

We also say goodbye to Davitt Walsh and Gavin Whelan who have had their contracts terminated by mutual consent.

We thank them for their efforts along with Chris Kingsberry who has also left the club and wish them well in football in the future.

On the subject of transfers, former striking legend Darren Armour who retired earlier in the season has been granted a formal release and joined Ards and we wish DA all the best with his new club.

300110 – New supporters fund-raising group

The Distillery Supporters’ Trust was set up on 23 January 2010.

Encompassing a wide mix of supporters, the main aims and objectives are the raising of funds for the club and promoting Lisburn Distillery to encourage new support through the turnstiles.

They plan to run events that will appeal to all on a regular basis and we would encourage everyone to support these.

In addition to Saturday night’s Poker event, they are also organising the following events in the next few weeks.

Quiz Night – Friday 26 February 2010 – Social Club New Grosvenor.

It is with deep regret that we learn of the recent deaths of two of our supporters.

261109 - Bucky to play in A-League Down Under

More news from ‘Down-Under” following on from our recent Andy Barron article.

This time it concerns our Australia correspondent and former captain Wayne Buchanan who has put pen to paper on a six week deal with Australia A-League side Gold Coast United.

Wayne has been in regular contact with our webteam since he went to Australia in May and updated us on Tuesday night – the story has now gone public in Australia, you can find out more here.

Wayne was unfortunate in his timing in terms of arriving in Australia for despite impressing in trials with  Gold Coast and Brisbane Roar he found that club ‘visa-spots’ had been already filled.

He deserves this breakthrough this season and we wish him well in the forthcoming games and his career in Australia.

251109 – Carling presents “Evening of Legends” – event summary

Carling presented a thoroughly enjoyable “Evening of Legends” in the Lisburn Distillery Social Club tonight, Wednesday 25 November 2009.

The “Legends” panel consisted of former player and manager Roy Welsh, goalkeeper Phil Matthews, striker Glenn Ferguson and manager Tommy Wright.  The event was presented by the inimitable Jackie Fullerton, a familiar face at Lisburn Distillery Annual Dinners in recent years.

Roy Welsh was first on the bill and he chatted to Jackie about his time at the club, the championship winning team of 62-63, the Benfica game and his spells as manager, including the 1985-86 County Antrim Shield win.

Phil then chatted about his time at the club and how much it had meant to him personally over the last nine seasons before Glenn gave an account of his phenomenal career after being shown the door by Ards as a 19 year-old, his thoughts on leaving Linfield and these testing times at the Whites.

Manager Tommy Wright was next to be interviewed and he spoke about his time at Norwich and Shamrock Rovers, his plans on this season and future ambitions of turning the side back into a top six team again including developing the youth structure to bring players through the club.

Questions were posed by members of the audience and the panel responded accordingly.

Several questions were put to Tommy about what would happen if the club was relegated and his answer first time around was quite clear – “We are going to stay up, we are not going to get relegated” said the Whites’ boss.

On being asked about life at Lisburn Distillery compared to Linfield, Glenn responded in his reply that he “was enjoying the challenge; if we do stay it will be one of the good things of my career.”

Phil looked at Glenn when asked who one of his toughest opponents was and also revealed his most memorable game for the Whites was against Armagh City in April 2002, the last game of the season and a day when the Whites returned to Premier football on winning the First Division title.

And Bertie McMinn was Roy’s choice for the best player during hiss time in the club, our former legend adding that he had played alongside many good players such as John Kennedy and Kenny Hamilton, but Bertie was right up there and above the others in terms of skills.

There were photograph and autograph opportunities with the Gibson Cup also present and we thank Carling for an enjoyable, professional and slick event and their league sponsorship. We hope the event will be held in future years again in conjunction with them.

221109 – Successful dinner raises funds for Youth Academy

“An enjoyable night – a real football night” was how guest speaker Dr Malcolm Brodie MBE summed up Friday night’s dinner in the Lisburn Distillery Social Club.

The event’ organised by the supporters clubs, was to raise funds for the flourishing Lisburn Distillery Youth Academy. That aim was achieved with around £800 being raised from the event - our thanks to all those who contributed and attended on the night.

Exactly 129 years to the day that Distillery held their first ever training session, it was fitting that club historian Dawson Simpson kicked off proceedings with a short history of those early years.

MC Ivan Martin then chatted to Malcolm Brodie about memories of the Whites and their history, the latter reflecting on Grosvenor Park and a host of memories – the ground itself and the Whites’ help to Glentoran in forties,  James Magennis VC, the famous floodlit games against Burnley and other sides and the greats who turned out for the Whites – Jack Rowley and George Eastham amongst many.

Ivan followed that up by chatting to guest Ferris Lunn about his time at the club in the fifties (78 goals in 193 appearances) and Ferris certainly had the audience’s attention when he explained how injuries were treated in those days!

Kenny Hamilton and Roy Welsh then chatted to Ivan about the Irish League Championship winning side (62/63) under George Eastham before Peter Watson and Alan McCarroll reflected on the late sixties and that 1971 cup winning side.

Lisburn Distillery manager Tommy Wright ended off the interviews giving his views on progress to date and his aims for the rest of the season.

An auction and ballot concluded a successful evening and we thank Terry Thompson and Bobby Radcliffe for their hard work in organising the event, and the caterers for a very enjoyable meal on the night.

Guests at the event (l-r) Dawson Simpson (Club Historian), Bobby Hanna (Vice Chairman Lisburn Distillery), Ferris Lunn, Ivan Martin, Dr Malcolm Brodie MBE and Tommy Wright (Manager - Lisburn Distillery)

The Lisburn Distillery Youth Academy website has launched a call for 'Saturday Sponsors'

The message from Academy secretary Ashley Wragg is simple; “We aim to have a different ‘Saturday Sponsor’ every week we have Academy teams playing between now and the end of the season” he explained.

“You can be a local business, a parent, coach or supporter to take part and help our fund-raising efforts for our players, which at the last count was almost 200 ‘Wee Whites’, at the Lisburn Distillery FC Youth Academy.

Saturday Matchday Sponsorship is only £30 and includes your website link or photo on the Academy website and this will be on the site for a full week between games. This will help out all our teams from mini-soccer, our girl’s teams, our Lisburn League teams and also our youth team over the season. “

171109 – Former Whites' midfielder World Cup bound

The last time New Zealand qualified for the World Cup Finals was back in 1982 – Northern Ireland fans will remember Spain 82 only too well. - but that changed at the weekend when the 'All Whites'  defeated Bahrain 1-0 on aggregate to book their place in South Africa next year.

Former Lisburn Distillery midfielder Andy Barron came on as a 64th minute substitute and now looks forward with his team-mates and coach Ricki Herbert to next year's finals.

Congratulations to him, we will be looking out for him in action. Our thanks to our Lisburn Distillery.net Australia correspondent, Wayne Buchanan, for the update.

051109 – WKD Intermediate Cup – Round 2

Lisburn Distillery Seconds have been drawn away against Ards on Saturday 28th November – kick-off is 1.30 pm

041109 – Co-Operative Insurance Cup Third Round

The new dates for this tie are as follows;

Tuesday 10th November 2009 – First Leg at New Grosvenor – 7.45 pm kick-off

Tuesday 01st December 2009 – Second Leg at Coleraine Showgrounds – 7.45 pm kick-off

041109 – Stephen Shaw leaves Whites

Stephen Shaw has unfortunately had to call time on his Irish League career due to work commitments across the water.

There had been a possibility that “Shawsy” (pictured left) would play in last night's game at Windsor Park but this did not happen meaning his last appearance was against Coleraine last Saturday.

He made 45 appearances after joining the Whites from Crusaders in late August 2007. He scored one goal, that being against Institute in the side’s first league win in early October and it may well prove vital in the Whites' battle for survival.

We thank him for his contribution at the club and wish him all the best for the future

Another player who also left Lisburn Distillery recently was keeper Paul Murphy. We also wish Paul well in the future too.

0411109 – Former secretary Fred Duke

It is with deep regret that Lisburn Distillery learnt of the death of former secretary Fred Duke.

Fred was secretary of Distillery in the mid-fifties to mid-sixties. It was exciting time for the club under managers Maurice Tadman and George Eastham, an era of famous floodlit football, cross-channel transfers and ultimately success in winning the Irish League title in the 1962-63 season. That was then followed with the memorable games in the European Champions Cup against Benfica and Fred was heavily involved in these events during his years at the Whites.

Well respected in both senior and junior football, Fred founded Knockbreda Football Club and on Saturdays he could be found either at Cairnshill or wherever the club were then playing in the Amateur League.

We extend our very deepest sympathy to his daughter Alison and the wider family circle. Fred will be buried in Knockbreda Cemetery following a funeral service at Knockbreda Parish Chuch on Friday 06th November at 11.00 am.   (DH)

291009 Jason Mok joins Lisburn Distillery

Lisburn Distillery manager Tommy Wright today confirmed that nineteen year-old Jason Mok has joined the club on a short-term contract. Subject to international clearance coming through, Jason will hopefully be available for selection against Coleraine in Saturday’s Co-Operative Insurance Cup tie.

Although born in South Africa, Jason is an Irish national who lives in Dundalk, the Whites’ boss adding; “ He lives in Dundalk and can play in a couple of positions for us; he is a young lad who was on trial with Shamrock Rovers”

Jason returns from a spell across the water with Sheffield Wednesday where he played for their Academy side. Although he played predominantly at left-back he can also play at centre-back or midfield.

The Whites’ boss also said; “At present I can only go for players out of contract, but when the window opens I will certainly be in wheeling and dealing for more new faces”

291009 Sir Tom piece added to Memorabilia Display

Hopefully you have had a look in at the Memorabilia Display on your visit to New Grosvenor. Situated in the club shop, everyone is warmly welcome to come in and share the rich heritage of this famous club.

The display continues to grow and former player Derek Meldrum added another item in the form of a superb framed image covering Sir Tommy Finney’s appearance for the Whites in 1963 against Benfica. The item carries Sir Tom’s signature.

It was presented to Derek following a special event to mark Sir Tom’s birthday earlier this year – we have reproduced an article by David Hunter on the event below - and Derek (pictured) was delighted to hand it over to the club at Stangmore Park during the week.

We thank him sincerely for that and the framed image will go on display at New Grosvenor shortly.

Derek Meldrum - ‘The plumber’s mate’

It’s funny how things stick in your mind. I think back to the end of the eighties and the the short-lived Sportsmasters quiz series presented by former ITV World of Sport custodian Dickie Davies, he with the white quiff of hair atop. Davies popped the question – “Name the only club that Tom Finney played European football for?” – the buzzer went off immediately, the rapid response; “Distillery”

That answer was spot on, and whilst Sir Tom was eighty-seven last Sunday, back on Thursday 26th March 2009, the town of Preston and the world of football paid homage to one of the genuine all time football greats on a day that was simply entitled “Sir Tom Finney Day”.

The Preston North End and England legend sat down along with some 500 guests and dignitaries that included Dungannon man Derek Meldrum. Derek played for the Whites against Barcelona and  he didn’t answer the question on Sportsmasters, he had no need to for he also had have the privilege of playing alongside Tom Finney on that special night at Windsor Park in the European Cup on 25th September 1963 against the mighty Benfica, a side that included “The Black Pearl”, Eusébio – 727 goals in 715 games tells its’ own tale.

The result for a crowd of just over 20,000 was an incredible 3-3 draw and the then Distillery manager George Eastham pulled off a coup before the game when he showed Finney into the dressing room.

“It certainly was a surprise!” said Derek. “We met him on the day of the match, he came into the changing room and Eastham took it upon himself to make him captain and encourage us a bit more. Everybody was just in awe of the situation when he appeared and the thought of then playing the mighty Benfica. It was just hard to take in what was ahead of us but Eastham himself was a great motivator.”

Finney had retired from his beloved Preston in 1960, and his Distillery colleague that night summed “The Preston Plumber” up succinctly. “I would describe him as a shy retiring person” he said; “and certainly very modest and although George Eastham introduced him you knew who he was when he walked through the door. He had a certain air about him, yet he was so modest. Whilst he hadn’t been playing for a few years it was just an inspiration to know that he was there with us. Distillery was a good side to play in, it was easy to play, it was all push and run football and that was the style of football that George Eastham brought to the club”.

It was a memorable night for Irish League football, one of the greatest results of all time for an Irish League side and Meldrum recalled it vividly adding; “It was a dreadful night, it lashed down with rain but that was probably to our benefit and we got off to a flying start by scoring early on in the game and that helped us to settle down It really was a fantastic night and a fantastic experience but the result really just made it for everyone.”

The Whites took the lead within the first minute through John Kennedy before Serafin equalised but Eastham’s side went in 2-1 ahead at the break thanks to a Kenny Hamilton strike. Benfica looked to be taking advantage home with them after goals from Eusébio and Serafin put them in front but ten minutes from time Stan Gregg fired home a goal that saw Distillery achieve a result considered nigh impossible before kick-off, Benfica 14/1 odds on.

“It was a truly great result” reflected Derek, “that Benfica side would have had the bulk of the Portuguese national team that  later came to England and did so well in the 1966 World Cup.”  And it did, no less than five of the team were in the Portugal squad that finished in third place in the 1966 World Cup.

Finney did not play in the away leg in the famous “Estádio da Luz” (Stadium of Light) as Derek went on to explain; “One of the reasons he played for George Eastham was that he played for Preston North End for all of his career and they played in white, he played for England who played in white and then for Distillery who played in white. But he had made up his mind beforehand that he would only play one game.”

Distillery lost the away leg 5-0 but that paled into insignificance when Derek met up with Sir Tom again at the end of March. “It was fantastic night” he said. “I was seated along with Cliff Jones (Spurs and Wales), Bobby Smith (Spurs and England), Alex Dawson (Man Utd and Preston), Jimmy Sewell (Sheffield Wednesday and England) and Brian Pilkington (Burnley and England).

We met Sir Tom, had a great dinner and there was a charity auction where a bust of Sir Tom sold for around £15,000! Many players were presented to the audience and asked questions about Sir Tom; I was called up on stage and asked about the night he played for Distillery.

Mark Lawrenson, Sir Trevor Brooking, Gordon Taylor Howard Wilkinson and David Pleat were just some of the many names there – it was fantastic just to be there and see them, I thoroughly enjoyed it.’

For the record, the sides that on that amazing September night were;

Distillery: Jack Kennedy, D. Meldrum, Patterson, John Kennedy, Gregg, Ellison, Anderson, Campbell, Finney (captain), J Meldrum, Hamilton.

Benfica: Pereira, Cavem, Raul, Cruz, Germano, Humberto, Yacua, Eusébio, Coluna, Serafin, Simoes.

We welcome him to the club. Davitt (pictured left) is no stranger to Whites’ boss Wright who initially signed him on-loan at Ballymena United from Bohemians back in 2007. He scored 11 goals in 16 competitive fixtures for United before making a permanent move in the January 2008 transfer window. He left United by mutual consent during the summer.

260909 - Tommy Wright is appointed Whites’ manager

Tommy Wright is the new manager of Lisburn Distillery Football Club. His appointment was confirmed after today’s game against Crusaders.

The forty-six year old former Northern Ireland international goalkeeper takes charge from Monday ending the caretaker roles being fulfilled by Tony Gorman and Harry Fay. The club thank both Tony and Harry for their work over the last two games following the departure of Jimmy Brown and wish them success in the future.

Tommy has already confirmed his backroom team will consist of John Cunningham (assistant manager), Jim Hagan (coach) and Iam McFaul (scout). Tommy managed Limavady United and then Ballymena United before moving on to become goalkeeping coach at Norwich City in May of last year. He then filled a similar role with Shamrock Rovers from February 2009..

When asked for his message for Lisburn Distillery fans, his response was; “ The important thing is that they keep behind the team, keep supporting the team. I know that it has been a difficult time for everybody but I took over Limavady in a similar if not worse situation and no disrespect to Limavady but when I took over there they probably didn't have the squad of players that is available to me at Lisburn Distillery. That doesn't mean to say it is going to be any easier so all I would say is stay behind the team and give them your full support and we will turn it round. There are plenty of games to go but we also realise that it is not going to be easy and hopefully (we can get the points).Too many people at this club have worked too hard to get the facilities at this club and to get this club in the Premier league to be challenging for the top four (spots) and it is important that we stay in the league.”

180909 -  Jimmy Brown leaves club

Lisburn Distillery Football Club announced on Friday evening, 18th September 2009, that it had parted company with manager Jimmy Brown by mutual consent.

Club chairman Jim McGrory and Jimmy Brown, who was appointed manager on 19 May 2009, spoke on Friday afternoon when the agreement to part company was made. The chairman speaking later on Friday night said; “"We have to get that first win and move off the bottom of the table. We had nine players from the team that finished fourth last season and we added six more experienced players to that squad,"

“We are very disappointed that things have not worked out" he added. “Jimmy Brown put in a lot of hard work in the short time he was here and it is always sad when situations like this arise. We will move on and look for a new manager but in the interim period Tony Gorman and Harry Fay will take charge of the team for the game at Coleraine on Tuesday night."

The Whites currently sit bottom of the Carling Premiership with one point from eight games. The next game is away to Coleraine on Tuesday night. Kick-off at Coleraine Showgrounds is 7.45 pm.

Although he stood down back in May after almost a decade on the site, he has come back on board on a short temporary basis to keep the Whites on the world-wide web - we thank him for this.

The site still needs further updating and we plan to bring you all the pre-season reports from Edward White and Don Newrhodes, with photographs from David, and Johnny Irwin, plus the Europa League reports shortly. 210709 IFA UNVEILS CARLING AS NEW PREMIERSHIP SPONSOR

THE Irish Football Association today unveiled Carling as the new sponsor of the top tier of domestic football in Northern Ireland.

The Carling Premiership, which kicks off on Saturday August 8, marks a significant investment for the beer brand in local football with a three year deal worth close to a quarter of a million pounds, the highest level of investment in the local league's history.

As well as a guaranteed £80,000 per year, Carling has also committed significant additional marketing support aimed at broadening interest in local football and boosting attendances at league games. Such support includes the introduction of a new website www.carlingpremiership.com where fans can check out news updates, results, match reports, fixtures and statistics. The new look site went live at 11.15am today.

Niall Phelan of Carling said he was looking forward to working with the IFA in the seasons ahead. "Today marks an important milestone in the history of Carling's long standing association with football at all levels," said Phelan. "As a brand, Carling is very passionate about the game so we're thrilled to have this opportunity to sponsor Northern Ireland's elite football division and work closely with the IFA, the clubs and, importantly, the fans to grow interest in the league and in local football as a whole.

"The Premiership is a fantastic league which mixes skill and excitement with guts and passion, but like all leagues, it would be nothing without the fans who cheer on their teams every week and support them through thick and thin," he continued.

"At Carling, we're football fans ourselves and it is our goal to be football fans' beer of choice when they goes for a pre-match pint or sit down to watch the game on TV. Our sales and market share have been growing consistently year on year in Northern Ireland, and we believe that this sponsorship will bring us closer to the fans and to the local game, which is exactly where we want to be.

"We look forward to an exciting new season and to working closely with the IFA to develop the Carling Premiership in the weeks, months and years ahead," concluded Phelan.

IFA president Raymond Kennedy welcomed the league's new sponsor. "The announcement of a new title sponsor for the Premiership in Northern Ireland is an important event for the IFA," said Mr Kennedy. "This season we're particularly excited to welcome Carling on board, a brand with a fantastic football pedigree and one that has done so much for the sport at the highest level.

"We are confident that the brand will be more than just a title sponsor and we welcome their input and assistance in helping us to develop not only the Premiership but football in Northern Ireland. We'd like to wish all 12 teams the best of luck for the coming season and look forward to celebrating with the winners of the first Carling Premiership next May," he added.

Hugh Wade, vice chairman of the IFA Premiership Management Committee, acknowledged Carling's commitment to football in Northern Ireland. "This sponsorship deal is great news for football in Northern Ireland and the investment is greatly appreciated by the 12 clubs involved" he said.

"We've seen the impact that Carling has had on the League Cup in England, which has enjoyed tremendous growth in terms of interest and prestige, and we look forward with anticipation that our partnership can have a similar impact at local level."

As part of today's announcement, the new Carling Premiership logo was unveiled, which will feature on all relevant promotional material and marketing campaigns, including 48 sheet billboards throughout Northern Ireland, bus shelter advertising, press and radio advertising, viral marketing, websites and monthly e-zines.

Sky Sports will once again feature five live Carling Premiership matches during the season, the first of which will be the Cliftonville v Linfield game on the evening of Monday September 21.

The Premiership sponsorship is a major addition to Carling's existing high profile football links, which include the shirt sponsorship of Glasgow giants Celtic and Rangers, as well as the Carling Cup in England, a competition that has enjoyed a massive resurgence in recent years.

Irish FA Media release

090709 FC Zestafoni 6 Lisburn Distillery 0

Report compiled by David Hunter

Lisburn Distillery crashed out of the Europa League in the searing heat of Zestafoni, Georgia.

Trailing 5-1 from the first leg, there was no realistic hope of headway but once again the team succumbed to an early opening goal in the fifth minute. A quick free-kick down the centre caught the back-four square, Gelashvili made a superb run from wide left and although Paul Murphy made a good stop with an outstretched leg, the defence failed to cover the rebound and Dvali hooked the ball home. A soft goal meant a long game ahead but the Whites kept the home side out though again chances for the visitors were at a premium; Stuart Thompson had a rare chance on 26 minutes that resulted in a corner.

And then with six minutes to go before the break, complete disaster as the Whites conceded three goals. Oniani broke down the right, his cross was met at the near post by Gelashivili and although Murphy once again made a point blank save, the ball again fell kindly for the unmarked Dvali who fired into the open goal. No luck though when it came to Dvalis’s hat-trick, a long ball over the defence saw Grigalshvili break clear, he drew Murphy out of goal before squaring the ball to Dvali, three nil.

Two minutes later on 44 minutes, the first half ended with Gelashivili firing home a good drive from just outside the box after a good interchange of passes.

It remained four nil up until the final three minutes of play when substitute Benashivli added the first of two goals. He finished off a good run to the edge of the box with a cracking left foot drive that sailed high into the net- the goal of the game - before he made it six right on the final whistle. Gelashivli went past three players before setting up Benashivli for a close range finish.

070709 - Fencing down

As part of the ongoing development work at New Grosvenor, the pitch-side fencing has been removed, the perimeter walls have been re-plastered and will shortly be painted.

This will improve spectator viewing and from the picture below the pitch is shaping up well ahead of the St Johnstone friendly on Wednesday 22nd July 2009.

They fly out to Istanbul before travelling onward to Tiblisi, the capital of Georgia. Zestafoni is approximately three hours away from the capital by coach so the team will have a long trip on match day.

We wish everyone a safe journey and hope that the Whites can produce a performance in the second leg.

The game kicks-off at 17.00 hrs local time and whilst we are unable to bring you direct coverage from it we will have round-up here on site on Thursday night.

200609 - Ballynahinch United 2 Lisburn Distillery 5

“A good workout” according to manager Jimmy Brown, but he quickly added; “There were a few things that I wasn’t happy with and that is something that we have to work on but having said we were missing six players. We talked about things at half-time and certainly improved, we won it (the second-half) 3-0 and were concentrating on keeping a clean sheet and working on the play in the back four.”

Although the Whites did concede two goals, neither came from open play, both came from the penalty. David Kelly scored the first on ten minutes but by then the Whites were two goals to the good, Neal Gawley and Mark Patton netting after two and five minutes respectively.

Although Gavin Melaugh cleared off the visitors’ line on 38 minutes Jimmy Brown’s side had opportunities to increase their lead before a controversial penalty decision on 44 minutes saw the two sides go in level at the interval.

Chris McCluskey was unable to continue after injuring himself when trying to save Owen Wright’s penalty so Reggie Hillen donned the gloves for another stint in goal, some four years after he was on the bench in Lithuania against Zalgiris Vilnius.

He commanded his area and up-front Glenn Ferguson took command as well, netting on 60 and 72 minutes. In between times Niall Atkinson netted a low drive from the edge of the box on 71 minutes.

Two hard training sessions to come followed by an away game next Saturday before the Whites are back in Europe once more.

Lisburn Distillery: McCluskey (Hillen 46), Melaugh, Murdock, S.Thompson, Dixon (McShane 66), Gawley (Ferguson 38), Shaw, Kilmartin, Patton, G.Thompson, Corey (Atkinson 66)

League of Ireland midfielder Gavin Whelan has become Jimmy Brown’s latest signing. Gavin has been signed in time for Europa League action and we wlcome him to Lisburn Distillery and look forward to seeing him in action shortly.to

180609 - Murphy signs

Whites’ boss Jimmy Brown confirmed that goal-keeper Paul Murphy (pictured left) has joined the club on a short-term - one month- loan deal.

With regular number one Phil Matthews unable to make the forthcoming Europa League ties, the manager opted to bring the experienced Murphy in to cover the European games. Paul and Chris McCluskey will be the two goal-keepers heading off to Europe shortly.

Paul was latterly with Newry City and we welcome him to the club.

Manager Brown will also be announcing another new signing shortly.

170609 - Dundalk 3 Lisburn Distillery 0

Summary from Edward White

A hard working gutsy performance by Lisburn Distillery proved to be not enough to grant new manager Jimmy Brown a winning start in this testing encounter against Eircom league side Dundalk. Although the Whites worked
hard throughout this pre-Europa Cup game, in truth they were always going to be up against it against a full time side who are well into their regular season

A quick fire goal in the third minute gave the hosts an early upper hand, a superbly taken strike by former NI Under 21 player Chris Turner made it two after 35 minutes and a last minute strike gave the home side a deserved three goal victory.

Debuts were given to Gavin Melaugh, Philip Simpson, Gary Thompson and Irish league legend Glenn Ferguson and doubtless manager Brown will have been pleased with all of the performances of his recent new signings.

Lisburn Distillery team: Matthews, Hall, McShane, Melaugh, Simpson,S.Thompson, Kilmartin, Gawley, Ferguson, G.Thompson, Patton. Subs (All used): McCluskey, Shaw, Corry, Alexander, Murdock

100609 – Academy continues to grow

Despite most junior teams taking a long summer break, the Lisburn Distillery Football Club Academy is training right through the summer months, working hard to build on the successes of last season.

The academy continues to grow at a rapid rate and has added two new teams for next season at Under 15 and also Under 16 level, taking the number of young players, both boys and girls at Lisburn Distillery to almost 180.

We would like to extend a warm welcome also to several new coaches at the Academy - Sam Allen and Dickie Evans with our new Under 16 team;  Martin McDade, Gerard McCarron and Laurance Green with our new Under 15 team. We also have Patrick Richards and Desmond Jones joining us to help with our Under 11 side.

Our youngest age groups play Mini-Soccer, (players aged up to 10 years old) and we welcome Colin Hamill to Lisburn Distillery Fottball Academy as our Mini-Soccer Co-Ordinator,

And, after a great response from local schools recently we have seen over 30 new mini-soccer players join our ranks along with coaches Nyal Walsh and Brian Hamill, bringing our coaching staff to 25.

In the coming weeks we hope to update the Academy part of the website with all next season’s teams, coaches and fixture links. We will also bring you the details of our Under 15s and Youth Teams Trip to the Foyle Cup in July.

We would also like a say a huge thank you to both Mark Livingstone and Ian Titterington for their work last season, both have now stepped down from coaching roles.

060609 - Kilmartin, Thompson and Hillen

Jimmy Brown was again working hard today with Lisburn Distillery chairman Jim McGrory as they both watch the Europa League draw loom ever nearer on the horizon.

Andy Kilmartin (left) has agreed a new deal with the club whilst we welcome midfielder Gary Thompson to the Whites. The young midfielder joins us on a two year deal from Linfield after being freed at the end of last season and we wish him well here at the club.

Manager Brown was also pleased to confirm that Reggie Hillen will continue as goal-keeping coach at the club to continue on all the good work he has done here in recent seasons.

Talks with other potential new players remain ongoing and we will keep you posted here on developments

010609 - Melaugh and Rogers

Ballymena United midfielder Gavin Melaugh (pictured left) will join Lisburn Distillery on 08th June 2009 on a two year deal. The former U21 international who spent four years across the water with Aston Villa and Rochdale is no stranger to manager Jimmy Brown, who said; “"I know Gavin from my time at Glentoran. I am pleased that we have signed him, he is a superb player and he will strengthen the team. He is only twenty seven, still in his prime and we have got a superb player."

Also hoping to join Lisburn Distillery is Liverpool-born defender Dave Rogers. Dave is no stranger to football on these shores, having won three League of Ireland titles with Shelbourne. He has also played in the Football League, Scotland and Holland. He hopes to join the Whites’ from Dundalk and when released his clearance is expected to be processed in July once the League of Ireland transfer window opens.

We look forward to seeing both players at New Grosvenor and wish them success with us.

300509 - Ferguson signs for Whites

The big news last week was that Lisburn Distillery has signed legendary Irish League striker Glenn Ferguson (left) on a one year deal.

After the 39-year-old, surprisingly released by Linfield last week, indicated he wished to play at the top level for one more season, manager Jimmy Brown and chairman Jim McGrory moved quickly to meet with the player.

A second meeting was held on Thursday night and the club are delighted that Glenn has agreed to join us.

The former Northern Ireland international is the third all-time highest scorer in Irish League football, behind Jimmy Jones and Joe Bambrick. He has scored over 500 goals in his career with Ards, Glenavon and Linfield, scoring 285 goals during his 11 year spell at Windsor Park after signing back in 1998 for £55,000. With 29 winner’s medals already in the cabinet manager Jimmy Brown was naturally delighted to have signed ‘Spike’.

"I am thrilled at signing Glenn and looking forward to working with him” said Jimmy. “He is a class act and his arrival is a massive lift for everyone at the club. He's not just interested in a pay-day for the last throw of the dice - we have not won a trophy in 15 years and he sees it as a challenge. He wants a challenge like that; Glenn didn’t want to join a club that lacked ambition. He still wants to win silverware and so do we. The last trophy Distillery won was the Gold Cup in 1994 under Billy Hamilton. We need to return to those glory days.”

"Glenn wants to eventually go into management” added Jimmy “and I have told him I will help him any way I can with the badges he needs. We have a good backroom team here with Tony Gorman and Harry Fay, both UEFA pro-licence holders, on board.

"A lot of hard work has been done by the board over the past week and we have managed to sell the club to Glenn who had a host of clubs to choose from."

The club continue to prepare for next season and additional signings will follow, please check back for details.

300509 - Players re-sign

Neal Gawley (below left) and Chris McCluskey have met and agreed new contracts with manager Jimmy Brown. Neal looks forward to the challenge of the new season after injuries last season whilst goalkeeper Chris has signed a two year deal.

Raymond Nelson will continue as club kitman.

Ryan McCann, Johnny Magee and Curtis Allen have all opted to leave New Grosvenor.

300509 Physio team

It’s same again for Jimmy Brown on the treatment of sports injuries as the Lisburn Distillery manager was more than happy to continue with the team that has served the club and the players well in recent times.

Jeff Blair is the club physiotherapist whilst Erin Woods and Eric Conroy (sports therapist) will continue their work and treatment with the players on match days etc.

270509 - Mark Cooling re-signs

Manager Jimmy Brown was pleased to confirm tonight that Mark Cooling has put pen to paper in a new deal.

Mark hopes to return to training shortly after sustaining serious ankle ligament damage back in March that put paid to his season and an U21 cap.

And we look forward to seeing him back in action as soon as he is fit.

250509 - Management team meet coaches

It’s a busy time for manager Jimmy Brown at present with New Grosvenor becoming a second home at the minute.

But the good news continues - Jimmy, Tony Gorman and Harry Fay all travelled to the club to meet the coaching staff from the seconds through to academy teams. They explained their own positions and how they were looking forward to working at Lisburn Distillery before meeting the various coaches who attended.

David Taylor and his current team will continue to look after the Seconds and manager Brown was also pleased to confirm that new contracts have been sorted out with Phil Matthews, Stuart Thompson, Pat McShane, Greg Hall, Chris Kingsberry, Stephen Shaw, Mark Patton, Gary Browne, Darren Armour and Gareth Corey.

The manager has more meetings with other players still to come in the next few days - we will bring you further news shortly.

230509 –Phil Matthews extends contract

Goalkeeper Phil Matthews has agreed a 12 months extension to his contract, which will take him to 2011 with the club.

The extension was agreed on Saturday on a day when manager Jimmy Brown met with a number of players to discuss contracts and other issues. The meetings went well and despite the frenetic start to his managerial career both manager Jimmy Brown and chairman Jim McGrory were well satisfied with the positive response from the majority of the squad.

Phil joined the Whites from Glenavon in 2000 and has gone on to make more than 300 appearances for the Whites. Last season he won the Harp Player of the Month for December from the Northern Ireland Football Writers' Association and was named in the same body’s Harp Irish League Team of the 2008-2009 season.

Last season, he also became the only goalkeeper in the history of the club to achieve 100 clean sheets.

And it’s also the FA Cup Final between Everton and Chelsea; the social club and bar will be open from 2 pm and we are also having a barbeque on the day.

Come along and support the event, enjoy the FA Cup Final and the afternoon with other Whites’ fans and make the close season a bit shorter.

If you would like to encourage them and sponsor a coach or player at the same time – then please email Lisburn Distillery Youth Academy Secretary, Ashley Wragg.

230509 - Whites’ Supporters in Ballyclare Tournament

On Saturday 23rd May, a team of Lisburn Distillery fans took part in a supporters’ football tournament organised by Ballyclare Comrades FC.

The Whites had the youngest squad at the event and played some good counter-attacking football. After narrow defeats in their first two games, the Whites’ final group game was against Portadown FC who took an early lead, however the Whites equalised and could have went in front with a couple of half chances before being caught out with a late sucker-punch by their Mid-Ulster rivals.

On behalf of the team, Ash Wragg would like to thank Ballyclare Comrades for organising the event and offering Lisburn Distillery a chance to be represented at it. The team would also like to thank Lisburn Distillery Youth Team manager Alan Craig for supplying the Whites team with a kit to play in.

It is hoped the Whites’ supporters will be taking part in similar events over the coming months and details will be made available through the club website and the Irish League Internet Supporters Forums.
